Kansas auto insurance requirements

Kansas law requires all auto insurance policies have these minimum coverages:

Bodily Injury Liability $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Property Damage Liability $25,000 per accident
Personal Injury Protection (PIP or No-Fault) $4,500 per person
Uninsured Motorist $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Underinsured Motorist $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident

Of course, this is a minimum and we would never recommend anyone choosing limits this low. For example, almost every new vehicle costs more than $25,000. With property damage liability limits that low you're exposing yourself to significant out-of-pocket costs.

Comprehensive and Collision coverage, often referred to as full coverage, are not required by the state. However, if you have a loan on your vehicle, your lender will require you to have full coverage.

Our minimum recommendations

We recommend selecting limits higher than the minimum required by the state of Kansas.

Bodily Injury Liability $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident
Property Damage Liability $100,000 per accident
Personal Injury Protection (PIP or No-Fault) Depends on your health insurance deductible
Uninsured Motorist $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident
Underinsured Motorist $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident

For Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, your health insurance deductible may be a factor in what limit you choose. For example, if you have a very high health insurance deductible, you may want to opt for more PIP coverage to avoid money out-of-pocket.

Average auto insurance cost in Kansas

According to Kaggle, the average cost for auto insurance in Kansas is $654 per year. This is for policies with minimum coverage and liability only. Of course, if you have adequate coverage as we discussed above, you're likely going to see a much higher rate.

For example, adding Comprehensive and Collision coverage will probably more than double your rate.

This puts Kansas as the 28th most expensive state for auto insurance. Michigan is the highest at $2,352 per year and South Dakota is the cheapest at $336 per year.

Average auto insurance cost in the region

State Average annual cost
Kentucky $1,338

Neither are required by state law in Kansas, however if you have a loan on your vehicle your lender will likely require you to carry Comprehensive and Collision coverage.
